Questions

Can I apply from inside Spain?

If you are in Spain legally (for example as a tourist), you do not need the visa: you can apply directly for the international telework residence permit, filed online with the Large Companies Unit (UGE). It is decided within 20 days and lasts up to three years.

How long does the digital nomad visa last?

The visa is valid for up to one year. Within the 60 days before it expires you can apply in Spain for the residence permit, valid for up to three years and renewable for two-year periods.

Can my family come with me?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, children under 18 (or older if financially dependent) and dependent parents can apply with you or later. Each one raises the income threshold, and they may work in Spain.

Do I have to pay Spanish social security?

Yes. Employees need their foreign employer registered with Spanish social security (or a certificate under a bilateral agreement); freelancers must register as self-employed (RETA).

Do you guarantee approval?

No one can. We make sure your file is complete and consistent with the official requirements, which is what most refusals come down to — but the decision is always the consulate's or the Ministry's.

Is a degree mandatory?

No. Three years of professional experience in functions similar to your remote job are an accepted alternative.

Can I work for a Spanish company?

Only as a freelancer, and only up to 20% of your total professional activity. Employees must work exclusively for companies based outside Spain.

Does my company need to register in Spain?

If you are an employee, yes: the company must register with Spanish social security as a non-resident employer — unless your country has a social security agreement with Spain and issues a coverage certificate.

Does the income have to come from work?

Yes. The Ministry's FAQ refers to sufficient resources obtained from income from work for you and your family.

Is it gross or net?

The minimum wage figures are gross amounts, and consulates compare against the gross SMI.

Will the figure change in 2027?

Yes, whenever the minimum wage is updated. We review this page every January.

How long does the Beckham regime last?

The year in which you change residence plus the following five tax years.

Do I apply automatically?

No, it is an option you must request following the procedure established by the Ministry of Finance.

Does my criminal record need an apostille?

Yes, like any foreign public document submitted with the application.

Can any translator translate my documents?

No. It must be a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or a translation made or validated by a Spanish consulate.

Is the €73.26 fee the same for family members?

Yes, the Ministry's FAQ states the fee applies to the initial application of both the holder and each family member.

How do I pay the residence permit fee?

Online in advance, by card, bank debit or Bizum, obtaining an NRC code you include with the application.

What happens if the UGE does not answer in 20 days?

The authorisation is deemed granted by positive administrative silence (Law 14/2013, art. 76.1).

Can I renew the residence permit?

Yes, for two-year periods, as long as you still meet the conditions.
